The Signal Jam Project began as an experiment to push back against the pervasive flood of advertisements saturating our daily lives. Ads, once merely occasional interruptions in our digital landscape, have evolved into a constant assault on our attention. The Signal Jam Project draws inspiration from the concept of “jamming,” a term typically used to describe radio interference. Where deliberate disruption fractures communication, and applies it to the world of advertising. The goal of Signal Jam is to disrupt this unrelenting stream, offering a stark reminder of the toll ad exposure takes on our mental space.

This book explores the origins, methods, and outcomes of The Signal Jam Project. It delves briefly into the history of advertising, examines the psychological impact of ad saturation, and details the processes and design tools used to visualize the data collected through research. It also documents an experimental design gallery. The book serves as a record of the data visualization process, responding not only to my own experiences with ad exposure but also to those of others. Through surveys, data research and collection, creative coding, TouchDesigner, 3D modeling, poster creation, and other design tools, this project employs diverse methods to investigate the impact of advertising. Designed with a deliberate
contrast between simple aesthetics and chaotic, overwhelming visual content, the book reflects the uneasy balance between simplicity and the sensory overload of modern advertising. It invites readers to reflect on their own
experiences with advertisements by looking back at ourselves and asking this critical question:

How deeply have ads invaded our lives,
and how do we reclaim that space?
